My Hat And I

Like the bicycle belonging
To Flann O’Brien’s Third Policeman
My hat has wandered

For 11 years, my hat and I
Undertook many walks and adventures
Became Natural together

I became it
And it surely became me
Training each other, to wear this life

And so it comes to be
That on this day of my Death Lodge
I must go forth alone, sans hat

The Universe in all its Mystery
Is teaching me to uncouple
To let go, my dear, friendly hat

Encouraging me to look
Deeper than a hat could bear
At the unslated soul within
